Healthy Salons for Oregonians

This page describes projects involving OCHNS and OCHNS partners. If you are a salon owner or community group and interested in being part of this collaborative or an upcoming project, please contact us at info@oregonhealthynailsalons.org.
Projects:
  • AVAILABLE NOW! Our 2011 calendars for Oregon nail salons are ready! Contact us if you'd like one for your Oregon salon!

  •  NEW Collaborative members have secured two grants to better understand health status, salon health and safety, and information and training needs. Zero Waste Alliance has a project titled "Assessment of Workplace Hazards and Health Needs among Vietnamese Nail Technicians." Funding for this project is provided by the Kaiser Permanente Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation. CROET at Oregon Health and Science University will be working with community partners on an internally funded pilot grant to identify concerns and workplace safety knowledge among nail technicians and owners.

  • 6/09 Needs Assessment for Oregon Collaborative for Healthy Nail Salons. Conducted by Sara Gerlt Schroeder, MPH Candidate at Portland State University; Supervised by Benjamin Duncan, Health Educator at Multnomah County Health Department.

  • 6/09 Spring 2009 project completed by Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing Students. Downloadable reports and summaries include: Community-Based Health Promotion in Nail Salons draft handout (pdf) and Community Diagnosis: Need for relationship between the Oregon Collaborative for Healthy Nail Salons and Southwest Portland Nail Salons (pdf).

  • Best Management Practices seminars for nail salon owners and technicians provided by Oregon Health Licensing Agency. The Oregon Health Licensing Agency (OHLA) recently became one of the first state regulatory agencies in the nation to offer health, safety and infection control training in lieu of paying a civil fine. Read more by scrolling to the topic "OHLA Offers Innovative Alternatives to Issuing Civil Fines" in OHLA's March Newsletter.

  • Test out the Oregon Collaborative for Healthy Nail Salons Best Management Practices' Checklist. This checklist, still in test stages, will be useful to salon owners, technicians and safety and health professionals interested in prioritizing health and safety needs in salons. While very comprehensive, the checklist can be adapted to specific interests or needs. Download the checklist.
